What Are Esophageal Varicose Veins and How Are They Treated?

Esophageal varices are abnormal dilation of the veins in the lower part of the esophagus. They occur more often in people who have serious liver disease, as they develop when normal blood flow to the liver slows down.

Sometimes esophageal varices can rupture causing life-threatening bleeding, while having no signs or symptoms unless they bleed.

The main goal in the treatment of esophageal varices is to prevent bleeding, as the latter is life-threatening.

Treatment includes the use of medications and a gastroscope.
