World Hemophilia Day began in 1989 and is observed annually in honor of the birthday of Frank Schnabel, the founder of the World Federation of Hemophilia in 1963.
Hemophilia is a group of inherited genetic disorders that impair the body's ability to control blood clotting, which serves to stop bleeding when a blood vessel is damaged.
People with hemophilia have low levels of the clotting factor in their blood and bleeding continues for very long periods.
