When is a colonoscopy performed?

1. Investigation of symptoms that may indicate bowel cancer, such as bleeding, change in bowel habits such as diarrhea or constipation.

2. Family history of bowel cancer.

3. Investigation of symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease such as ulcerative colitis.

4. Bowel monitoring if you have previously had a polyp or cancer removed, or if you have a family history of a genetic polyp syndrome.

5. After another test such as a CT scan or virtual colonography, if you need further evaluation or treatment.
