How does chemotherapy work?

Chemotherapy is one of the most common treatments for cancer. Chemotherapy drugs kill tumor cells or stop their growth to prevent the tumor from spreading to other parts of the body.

Chemotherapy may be taken alone or in combination with radiotherapy or other anti-cancer drugs. Also, it can be taken by injection or orally. To allow the body to regain strength and regenerate healthy cells, chemotherapy is applied in cycles of several weeks.

How does chemotherapy work?

Chemotherapy drugs work in different ways. They can:

• They eliminate malignant cells, but also healthy ones.
• Eliminate only malignant cells.
• They prevent the formation of blood vessels, which inhibits tumor growth and development.
• They attack the DNA of the malignant cell to cause its death.
