What is endoscopic polypectomy?

Polypectomy is a mini-invasive endoscopic procedure that allows the removal of polyps of the digestive tract, through the use of a flexible instrument equipped with a small camera, which is inserted through the mouth (gastroscopy) or the rectum (colonoscopy) by the doctor who performs the examination to enabling the identification of polyps.

Most intestinal malignancies are caused by initially benign polyps (adenomas). For this reason, stomach and intestinal polyps should be removed.

In most cases, colorectal cancers begin as precancerous polyps, which are growths that extend from the inner wall of the intestines and stomach.

Control of polyps and colon and stomach is necessary for people over 40 years old. However, this examination is also performed for younger ages when risk factors are present.
