What is TEA? (Carotid Endarterectomy)

Carotid endarterectomy is an intervention that is performed in cases where there is an obstruction in the blood circulation of the carotid artery, which allows the passage of blood to the brain.

This obstacle can cause brain damage, while the intervention in question aims to avoid this risk.

The intervention is performed to clean and remove the atherosclerosis plaque that forms at the level of the carotid bifurcation.

The patient is operated under the effect of local anesthesia, this is because he must be awake to be monitored and to see if the brain function is not deteriorating.

How long does the intervention last?

About an hour, but the most important part is the first 15 or 16 minutes, the carotid occlusion part and then the carotid closure.
